It’s smoothie season! You may have been drinking smoothies all year round but in the summertime, it’s a really great way to add more fruit and vegetables and benefit from more nutrients on a daily basis.
Smoothies are a great swap for breakfast, perfect for after a workout or a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage at sunset.
I love finding new smoothie recipes and really just getting creative because sometimes we all have a tendency to make the same smoothies over and over again and so I wanted to share with you some of my favorite summer smoothie recipes.
How To Make a Great Smoothie
Let’s start with the basics of making a smoothie great. In general, we toss in our fruit and veggies, whatever tastes good and hit 'blend' until creamy, then we are good to go, right?
However, with a bit of thought, we can make them healthier with a few quick tweaks. A good rule of thumb is the 60/40 rule - 60% fruit and 40% leafy greens. This will help the taste and guide you to have a balanced smoothie.
Build Your Smoothie:
Start with greens - remember a big handful will do.
Add in a teaspoon of either hemp seeds, ground flax seeds or chia seeds.
Now add your fruit.
Add a liquid of your choice - just add a bit at a time until your smoothie is at the right consistency.
Extras. This is a great place to toss in some extra ingredients to give your smoothie that healthy kick.
I suggest you head over to my How to Make Healthy Smoothies blog and find out exactly what those extras are. You will be amazed at how super you can make a smoothie.
Chai Peach Green Smoothie
Now for my all-time favourite smoothie recipe, you have to give the Chia Peach Green Smoothie Recipe a try. What makes this smoothie so good is the chia seeds. They are not only full of fibre and essential Omega-3 fatty acids, but they contain all of the essential amino acids from protein!
Cherry Inspired Smoothies
For those of you that love cherries or need some help falling asleep at night, I highly recommend the Sleepy Time Cherry Smoothie Recipe or the Cherry-Ginger-Lime- Smoothie . Tart Cherries are naturally rich in melatonin, tryptophan, vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium, plus a bit of Magnesium. All the good stuff to help you get a good night’s sleep.
If you’re craving a caffeine hit in the morning then you should try Matcha. It gives a longer-lasting energy boost than coffee without the crash. Plus the recipe really is delicious! Go on grab my Vanilla Matcha Smoothie Recipe, this energizing smoothie is a nice change from your typical fruit smoothie or that morning coffee.
